THE DATA |
|
The Centre has a large database containing specific
and wide-ranging agricultural data focusing on major cereals, coarse
grains, pulses, roots and tuber crops in the region of Asia and the
Pacific. |
|
Crop related indicators include: general indicators, production, price,
trade, cost structure and food balance sheets. |
- General indicators are macro indicators, which are
closely related with aspects of secondary crop development and
policies. They cover land utilization, population and other economic
indicators such as: price indices, exchange rates, investment in
agriculture, GNP, GDP, income per capita, consumption, various
indexes, agricultural inputs, foreign trade, rainfall etc.
- Production is total yield measured in predetermined units
and is collated from the total monthly reports.
|
Data for crop areas
generally refers to area harvested and area planted. In Sri Lanka, in
particular, these are further classified by season: Yala season (minor
rainy season that occurs between March and July) and Maha season (major
rainy season during the rest of the year).
All yield figures are given in kilograms per hectare. In all cases,
they are computed from detailed harvested area and production data which
are expressed in hectares and metric tons respectively.
The time reference for statistics on area and crop production is
based on the calendar year.
Area harvested is the area which is harvested after the crops come of
age.
Area planted is the area which is planted to crops (seeded).
- Data under the price category covers: farm gate price, wholesale
price and retail price
- Data concerning trade on exports and imports of secondary crops
is in quantity and monetary value. There is also some data on F.O.B
(Free on Board) and C.I.F (Cost, Insurance and Freight) for certain
countries.
|
| The time reference for
statistics on imports and exports is based on the calendar year.
|
- Data on cost structure is on the basis of production and cost of
production per hectare, which are closely related with aspects of
secondary crops. It covers production, total cost, seeds,
pesticides, fertilizers (chemicals, manure, etc), costs (hire of
tools/hire of animals, irrigation fees, maintenance, transportation,
etc), wages/salaries (grubbing, ploughing, sowing/planting workers,
fertilizing insecticide, weeding, harvest workers, etc), other costs
(taxes, etc.)
|
|
The time reference for statistics on cost structure is based on the
calendar year.
|
- Food balance sheets present a comprehensive picture of the
pattern of a country's food supply during a specified reference
period. The food balance sheet shows for each food item the sources
of supply and its utilization (i.e. each primary commodity and a
number of processed commodities potentially available for human
consumption).
It is important to note that the quantities of food available for
human consumption, as estimated in the food balance sheets, relate
simply to the quantities of food reaching the consumer. Farm waste
during distribution and processing is taken into consideration as an
element in the food balance sheets.
The accuracy of food balance sheets, which are in essence derived
statistics, is of course dependent on the reliability of the
underlying basic statistics of the population, supply and
utilization of foods and of their nutritive value. These vary a
great deal between countries, both in terms of coverage as well as
accuracy.
|
| Comprehensive country data
(spatio-temporal coverage) from 1960 to the present is available for
Asian and Pacific countries.
Data for all indicators at the national level is available to interested
individuals for downloading at no charge. The latest feature of the
statistical on-line database is the provincial level data. The
data is compiled based on the national sources from each respective
country. |
