Sixth Session of the Governing Council of the Centre for Alleviation
of Poverty through Secondary Crops Development in Asia and the Pacific (CAPSA),
23 March 2010, Bangkok, Thailand
(Report)CAPSA’s Governing Council held
its sixth session in Bangkok on 23 March 2010. In all, 17 people
attended representing Governing Council members (Bangladesh, France,
Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand), China, the Philippines, UNESCAP, FAO and
the International Potato Centre.
The Governing Council elected the following officers: Chair: Dr.
Tengku Mohd. Ariff Tengku Ahmad (Malaysia), Vice-chair: Dr. Hasil
Sembiring (Indonesia) and Rapporteur: Dr. Abdul Kalam Azad (Bangladesh).
Council members adopted a set of recommendations to revitalize the
Centre, key among them were i) implementation of strategic action
elements over the next two years; ii) strengthened collaboration with
the private sector in support of agribusiness development; iii)
expansion of the Centre’s network with national agricultural research
centres in the region and with ESCAP’s regional institutions,
particularly the Asian and Pacific Centre for Transfer of Technology (APCTT)
and United Nations Asian and Pacific Centre for Agricultural Engineering
and Machinery (UNAPCAEM); iv) engaging members and development partners
in receiving staff secondments, hosting CAPSA activities and staff, and
identifying and more effectively utilizing focal points in each member
State; and v) a proposal to change the name to the Centre for
Alleviation of Poverty through Sustainable Agriculture.
