The objectives:

  1. To identify the international trade of agricultural products with special focus on CGPRT crops in the region under further liberalized market conditions.
  2. To characterize the situation and prospects of agriculture in selected Asian countries with special attention to the effects of trade liberalization.
  3. To specify policy options for improving farmers’ income in the process of trade liberalization.
  4. To provide concerned policymakers and researchers with discussions and suggestions on the above findings

The activities:

  1. The TradeLib project began operationally in March 2007.
  2. The project was implemented in collaboration with partner institutes from the ten participating countries:
    • Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, P.R. China
    • National Centre for Agricultural Economic and Policy Research (NCAP), India
    • Forestry and Horticultural Research Centre, Indonesia
    • Japan International Research Centre for Agricultural Sciences (JIRCAS)
    • Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development Institute (MARDI)
    • National Agricultural Research Centre (NARC), Pakistan
    • Bureau of Agricultural Economics, the Philippines
    • Korea Rural Economic Institute (KREI)
    • Office of Agricultural and Cooperative (OAE), Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives, Thailand
    • Agricultural Economics Institute, Viet Nam
       
  3. The project consisted of three studies
    1. Institutional study on international agricultural trade liberalization (institutional study). It included reviews and analyses on: history of trade regime; trade regime at present and towards 2000 or 2004; and infrastructure related to foreign trade.
    2. Study on effects of trade liberalization on commodities (commodity study). It included reviews and analyses on: export and import; international trading patterns; and international trade performance.
    3. Study on effects of trade liberalization on local agriculture (location-commodity study). It included reviews/analyses on: the effects of trade liberalization on selected commodities at local or farm level; and effects of trade liberalization on location-specific agriculture
  4. The implementation period of the project was divided into two phases:
    1. First phase: April 1997 - June 1998
    2. Second phase: July 1998 – December 1999.

  3. The proceedings of a workshop held in Bogor, Indonesia, October 5-8, 1999 were published as CAPSA’s Monograph series.
